Marijuana and Psychosis

The Green Mile – A Mental Health Therapist’s Clinical Experience With Client Marijuana Use
Written By Robert Glenn Kaminsky MC, Registered Provisional Psychologist
I have watched with great interest the implosion of misinformation within our population on sound reason and common sense related to the decriminalization and potential legalization of marijuana.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual version 5 (DSM-V) (2013) has recently published prevalence rates for substance use and specific disorders in the general population – first-episode psychosis (7-25%),depressive disorder (11%), bipolar disorder (13%), obsessive compulsive disorder (19%), anxiety disorder (24%),internalizing disorders [including anxiety, depression and post traumatic disorder] (33%), and externalizing disorders [including conduct, attention-deficit/ hyperactivity]. Up to 80% of individuals receiving treatment for another substance use disorder reported previous use of cannabis (DSM-V,2013).
Research submitted by Australian professionals (Large M. “Cannabis Use and Earlier Onset of Psychosis,” Archives of General Psychiatry, Feb. 7, 2011), revealed an earlier onset of psychoses by 3 years in individuals having reported previous use of marijuana. Andreasson, Engstrom, Allcbeck, et al. (1987) and  Hall and Degenhardt (2000) confirmed that marijuana `s use contributed to the development or worsening of mental health conditions. Most revealing is cancer research carried out by Daling et al. (2009) reporting that men diagnosed with nonseminoma testicular growth cell cancer were more than 2 times more likely to be current users of marijuana at the time of the diagnoses.
In my current position as a mental health therapist working with men and women aged 18 to 65 years old, 9 clients previously diagnosed with one of the schizophrenic spectrum disorders report current or previous use of marijuana. My resolve is bolstered by both my clinical experience and the vast body of literature showing marijuana’s consistent role in the development and maintenance of severe mental health symptoms in individuals vulnerable to symptom development.

Sorry I have not been adding to my blog as of late but I have been dealing with a serious case of ‘blamarrhea.’ I am dismayed at the number of folks who have selfishly used a public venue to peddle their junk products. These few individuals have exhausted my time and prevented well-meaning individuals from utilizing my blog as an avenue for help from the life-damaging consequences of substance abuse and other addictive behaviours. I will continue to report the blammers to my website manager and block your efforts on my public site. You will not receive the attention you are seeking.

Konichiwa Tomadatchi

I am pleased to see my friends in Tokyo have come on board and registered their visits on my site. In addition to my commitment to providing you with any tools you may need to strengthen your psyche, I also want to better understand the culture you are facing your problematic behavior in. I understand from my experience that substance abuse is frowned upon in Japanese culture. My understanding is that compulsive addictive behaviours such as sex addiction are much more common in Japanese culture.  I look forward to your educational response. Domo arigato.

Appreciation For Your Responses

Please be advised that I have been receiving an overwhelming number of responses to my blog. I am very appreciative of your attention to my message. I endeavour to respond to every legitimate blog comment however, I have also been receiving "Blamming" from individuals seeking to market their wares. I will not post these "blooming blamms" nor will I respond - please stop wasting my time and your own. I do however, invite your personal comments and responses and look forward to responding to them. Thanks for your understanding.

Copyright of Intellectual Property

I have been asked an important question from my brethren in China regarding concern for the copyright of my intellectual property. I view recovery as a universal language without capitalism. Experiences are lived and turned into personal slogans and sayings. The vast majority of what I make available to you has been passed on to me by individuals just like you. Additionally, every therapeutic encounter produces rich experiences for both the client and myself which are nothing short of amazing. These experiences are then shared in the form of a metaphor, story, blog entry, or new illustration which becomes a part of the language of recovery. I also remain deeply indebted to the amazing stories which you, the client, continue to privilege me with during the hour of power.

Why I Don't Offer Free First Sessions?

The reason I do not offer a free first consultation is it tends to foster a therapeutic impasse. A free consultation places the responsibility on the therapist to convince the client they have a problem and need help. I work from the position of the client having acknowledged his/ her powerlessness and unmanageability over his/ her problem behaviour and readiness to do what it takes to start on the recovery journey. This therapeutic position tends to invite fewer service enquiries but also tends to provide a more ready, willing, and capable participant  for the intensive task work required. The most successful client is the one who has shown the courage to convince him or herself that they have a problem and must help themselves first.

How Do I Rebuild Trust?

Believe what you see. If your partner is doing the work of recovery and you see continued evidence of this, perhaps there is reason to begin to have trust again. While it is not healthy for you to be in the role of checking up on your partner like a detective, you will soon see evidence that he or she is or is not worthy of trust.
Believe your feelings. Learn once again to listen to your inner voice. Unfortunately, many partners have learned not to trust their feelings because the sex addict was so convincing in the past. He or she may have gone to extraordinary lengths to persuade you not to trust your feelings. In the past you denied suspicions and dismissed the inner voice telling you that something was going on behind your back. You convinced yourself it was all in your mind, or your partner convinced you to trust his or her version of the truth and not your own reality.
Part of taking care of yourself is realizing that you can trust your feelings and your inner voice.
